Just picked up a used book of Hogarth engravings published in 1973. This image is taken from Rake’s Progress, a funny account of a devious man who marries to support his gambling habit. The expressions of his subjects are priceless. In the 1740’s Hogarth’s game was social and political commentary, well ahead of his time (take THAT Goya!). The world needs more William Hogarth.
